House Plants

The gang got rounded up today for a few group photos.

Mike - the Burro's Tail and Aloe Vera are healthy and looking fine.
(I'm getting nice comments about your photos on the
Folk Fair page)

Kim - Do you remember how many years ago you gave the strawberry plant to me?  It occasionally (once or twice a year) has young plants growing out on runners which I plant inside the pot.

Tim - I think I need to leave the heat a little higher for the bamboo.  It has done remarkably well the last 2 years.  The blue marbles sunk to the bottom as the substance holding them up disappeared after the first year, so I took the marbles out
.

Ann - The German Ivy is doing wonderfully as you can see and has a few
young ones getting started in little glasses of water.  The day you gave the pieces to me was warm and they were wilting by the time I got home, but it survived nicely and has thrived.

Shamrock Plant & Spider Plants are from Aunt Ellen.

The large chimes were made by my Dad.

My Hollywood Schwinn wanted to get in on the last photo.
This bike was used when I got it in the 1960s as a kid.
Love chrome fenders.

When I get my own place, any carpeting is going out the door before I move in.

I may buy a small Norfolk Island Pine if there are any decent ones left for the after Christmas sales.  Also may get an African Violet.  I'd like to try Orchids.

What kind of house plants do you have?
What are your favorites?
What do you recommend for flowering house plants?

Skip has asked me if I'd like to try snow shoes when there is snow.
I hate snow almost as much as I hate carpeting, but I think his idea would be fun to try - get some exercise and see some of the scenic out of doors.  Has anyone tried snow shoes?  Any advice?  This is giving me something to look forward to with the snow.

1 am Monday morning- first snow fall to cover the ground. OK, Skip, where do we get the snow shoes?

Moni has nice Christmas clip art on her journal.
Here is a poem I found on
Performance Horses journal.

Christmas on the Prairie

It was Christmas on the prairie
and no tannenbaums in sight.
The moon in a cloudless sky
lighted up the winter night.

Way back in the hills
a wee little soddy stood,
nestled by a creek,
in a growth of cottonwood.

Around that little shack
snow was drifted belly deep.
The cattle were all bedded down
and the cowboys were asleep.

Lamplight softly warmed the room
inside that old sod shack
and cowchips burned like tinder
holding the winter back.

The Christmas tree, a sagebrush,
slightly lighted by the lamp,
stood in the soddy's window
to brighten up their camp.

They were a long way from home
and they'd done the best they could
to celebrate that Christmas
just as their families would.

Wonderful plants Connie. The Christmas Cactus is beautiful. We had several and I gave some to Betty then she gave me one for my birthday. We have a large one that we left outside too long and the frost got it. I don't know if it will make it or not, but it is still green, hasn't bloomed. The Spider plants we have lots of them. Still have some outside. When I lived in California, I planted them under a large tree and they spread all over the back yard, like a ground cover, it was weird. I can't think of any good indoor blooming plants except maybe citrus. The little lemon and orange trees smell so good when they bloom and actually will bear fruit. Also hibiscus is pretty indoors if it gets some sun. Love you pictures and I think it is great that you kept your bike. Thanks for the happy birthday to Floyd, he will love it. He is asleep now, lol. Always enjoy my visits here. I am having camera problems, now the pictures don't want to upload to the computer? I removed the driver and put it back but still. Makes me crazy.

Connie~ try the snowshoeing:)it's fun; but a little advice... don't follow in Skip's tracks...make your own trail; it's a lot easier that way. And keep your bindings tight; you'll know why I said that when you give it a try. It can be the difference between being upright and looking at the sky.

A stranger will always be a stranger
unless one reached out for the other. I
am glad I decided to make that move to
get to know this person for I believe
that by doing such, I am building a
connection to someone who deserves
to
have friends. It could be luck that
this person approved my request to be
her friend even if we don't even know
each other personally. Relying on mere
profiles, it really takes trust to open
such door and let somebody in. I made
the right choice when I knocked! Thanx
for letting me in! Words of
appreciation will never be enough. Let
time prove that even in the world of
information super highway, a real
friendship can exist. Each friend
represents a world in us, a world
possibly not born until they arrive,
and it is only by this meeting that a
new world is born.Take care and GOD
Bless! Life is Beautiful...
ur so simple beauty of a flower

Thank you very much for all these kind and heart warming comments. I will share your compliments on the chimes with my Dad. He is 81 and has cut down on wood working projects.

Cathy - I have so enjoyed your outdoor flower photos.

Robin – Yes, I love that bike.

Baitlady – I will follow your advice. There was a snow cover at home, but at work there was no snow. Skip said we need 6- 12 inches minimum, preferably 12.

Sparkle – I met you when I won the journal of the week award and you stopped by. I’ve been enjoying your journal ever since. Your comment means a lot.

Will – Yes, we need to support Steve.

Simple White Lady – There are good friends here.

Thank you for the replies!

I haven't updated my resume but with everything going on I pray to God I won't have to until after the first of the year. You are an inspiration, Connie. I don't understand about the situation with Steve. Is he alright? I am outside the loop. Everytime I have tried to say hi I have been 'ignored', but I know the poor guy is BUSY. You're the BEST.

Thanks Cathy, Yes, I took the photos. All except the one where I'm in the photo - that was taken by my friend Mike L.

Tove - Thank you for your comments. I just bought 2 little Christmas cacti tonight. We'll see how they do. The site you found is a good one. I did not know they were called 'Lucky Clover' but there they are!
Tita - Steve's cat Maggie is back on his site now. I think things are returning to normal.

David - my friend Mike who gave me the aloe vera years ago replied to this. I tried to email you but it bounced back.

Hi,

Not sure. Many of mine tend to lean over the side of the pot, rather than growing straight up. There are many options.
1. Split the plant - probably root
bound and could get 10-20 plants from one.
2. You can cut pieces off to use for burns, etc.
3. Try to plant in a larger pot.
4. Place in area where plant has to
grow up toward the light instead of being directly in the window (growing sideways). It could possibly be
the type of aloe or it could be too much water (makes it grow faster).

I would suggest the splitting and trying a variety of the suggestions to see if any of them work - or which one works the best.
